¿Es Difícil Ser Mujer?: Una Guía Sobre Depresión (EDSM)

Is it Difficult Being a Woman?: A Guide on Depression

Our Story

Is it difficult to be a woman?" is a research-based curriculum developed from a longitudinal study conducted by Dr. Asunción Lara in Mexico City in 2001.

The project promotes gender-specific and culturally competent education and training through a 1-hour 1/2 workshop session (originally 6-7 weeks each with 1 1/2 hours per week) for 15-20 participants in each workshop aimed at learning to recognize symptoms of depression and underlying contributing factors such as domestic violence,  substance abuse, and cultural and economic challenges.

The project focuses on: (1) building community capacity among Hispanic women to increase education and awareness of the social factors that contribute to depression, mental health issues, and domestic violence, and (2) providing culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate information about domestic violence and mental health promotion to Community Health Workers.

Participants identify the necessary interventions and learn strategies that improve health to communicate more effectively and also create a domino effect that impacts the lives of each member of their community.
